Lawyer Steven A. Schwartz is facing potential penalties after using the AI ChatGPT to fabricate citations and opinions in a brief. The Manhattan judge, of Federal District Court, ordered a hearing in response to lawyer’s  acknowledgment of using the AI for his research. Schwartz expressed surprise at ChatGPT’s ability to generate seemingly authentic case citations and judicial opinions. He explained that he had discovered ChatGPT through his college aged children and various articles, but had never utilised it professionally. The incident has attracted significant media attention and sub-jected Schwartz and his law firm, Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, to public ridicule. The judge will determine whether sanctions are warranted for Schwartz’s conduct.
