In an extraordinary turn of events, the mummified remains of a small-time thief, known as Stoneman Willie, who was embalmed over a hundred years ago, have finally been laid to rest, leaving behind a legacy of intriguing fascination.
Stoneman Willie, whose real name was James Murphy, met his demise in 1895 and was subsequently embalmed using a unique preservation method developed by an innovative mortician. This incredibly well-preserved body was displayed in an open casket at a local funeral home for more than a century until it was decided that it was time for Willie to be given a proper and respectful send-off.
Willie’s life of crime started with pick pocketing and eventually led him to imprisonment, where he died of kidney failure. For many years, no family members came forward to claim his body. T.C. Auman, the original owner of the funeral home, can be credited as the mastermind behind the unique preservation of Willie.Auman proactively embarked on the task of embalming Willie through innovative methods, leading to a well-preserved body that retained its hair, teeth, and flesh even after the passage of a century. As time elapsed, the originally fresh appearance of the skin and flesh gradually transformed into a deep brown hue.
The funeral home embarked on an interesting journey to convince state authorities to allow them to keep these well-preserved remains for observation of the decomposition process. This attracted significant public interest and made Stoneman Willie an unexpected attraction, sparking the curiosity of those who saw him. In a fitting start to his final journey, he was paraded through the city of Reading in a motorcycle hearse on his way to his own funeral.
Dressed in a tuxedo appropriate for his time, complete with a bow tie and a bright red sash, Stoneman Willie was finally laid to rest. His tombstone bears both his real name—James Murphy—and his alias—Stoneman Willie—as a testament to his unusual legacy.
This strange case serves as a reminder of the fascinating and sometimes eerie twists that history can take. The story of Stoneman Willie will undoubtedly continue to captivate and baffle future generations, proving that history is full of surprises waiting to be discovered.
