The Supreme Court of India recently dismissed a petition seeking a complete ban on the employment of Pakistani artists in India, urging the petitioner not to be “so narrow-minded”. The bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and S V N Bhatti, upheld the decision of Bombay High Court(BHC), which had rejected the plea.
The petition had called for a total prohibition on Indian citizens, companies, and firms from employing or associating with any Pakistani artist, including cinema workers, singers, musicians, lyricists, and technicians. BHC, in dismissing the petition, had stated that the relief sought was a step backward in promoting cultural harmony, unity, and peace.

The court emphasised that being a patriot does not necessitate hostility towards those from abroad, particularly neighbours. It further highlighted that arts and culture transcend national boundaries and contribute to peace and tranquility.
This ruling has sparked a conversation about the role of arts in fostering peace and the judiciary’s role in upholding these values amidst divisive sentiments. In a related development, the Union Government has permitted the Pakistani cricket team to participate in the World Cup held in India, which is seen as a step towards promoting international peace.
