In an era where the internet is a double-edged sword, the Madras High Court has delivered a verdict that could serve as a precedent for online conduct. Justice N Sathish Kumar has ordered YouTuber Joe Michael Praveen to pay a hefty sum of Rs 50 lakh to trans person entrepreneur and AIADMK party spokesperson, Apsara Reddy.
The court’s decision comes in the wake of defamatory content posted by Praveen on YouTube, which had a detrimental impact on Reddy’s character, behaviour, and personal life. The judge observed that such statements, devoid of any semblance of truth, are not only objectionable and malicious but also infringe upon the privacy of individuals.

The verdict underscores the fact that the right to post on YouTube does not grant one the liberty to cross boundaries and encroach upon others’ privacy. The judge further noted that the libellous videos led to the cancellation of some of Reddy’s programmes.
While damages cannot be claimed, the court deemed it necessary to compensate Reddy with at least Rs 50 lakh. The judge also urged Google to exercise vigilance in the future to prevent the hosting of such malicious content.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential harm that can be inflicted through digital platforms. It underscores the need for responsible online behaviour and the importance of respecting the privacy and dignity of individuals. As the saying goes, “With great power comes great responsibility,” and this is especially true in the digital age.
