Delhi High Court schools society on genetics, emphasising it’s the man’s chromosomes that determine a child’s gender, not the woman’s
In a recent verdict that has sent ripples across the nation, the Delhi High Court has taken a firm stand against the deep-seated prejudice of gender bias. The court dismissed a bail plea from a husband accused of tormenting his wife over insufficient dowry and the birth of two daughters, leading to the woman’s tragic suicide.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, in a stern rebuke, emphasised the need for education among those who perpetuate regressive mindsets. She asserted that it is the son’s chromosomes that determine the child’s gender, not the woman’s. This ruling shed light on broader societal concerns, emphasising that a woman’s intrinsic value should not hinge on her family’s ability to meet exorbitant financial demands or the gender of her children.

The court lamented the prevalent ignorance of genetic science, clarifying that the determination of a child’s gender relies on the combination of X and Y chromosomes. Despite this scientific reality, numerous cases of harassment, suicide, and dowry deaths persist due to the unreasonable desire to “preserve the family tree” by having male heirs.
This judgment underscores the urgent need to combat such deep-rooted prejudices and create a supportive environment for married women, ensuring their well-being and dignity beyond societal expectations. It serves as a reminder that the fight for gender equality is far from over, and that education, particularly in science, can play a crucial role in dispelling harmful myths and stereotypes.
