Declaring that the &#8220;right to development&#8221; stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the &#8220;right to a clean environment,&#8221; the apex court reinstated Auroville\u2019s ability to build\u2014albeit with sustainability in mind.<\/p><p>A bench comprising Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Prasanna B Varale struck down the NGT&#8217;s April 2022 order, calling it legally unsound and beyond the tribunal\u2019s jurisdiction. With its iconic Matrimandir\u2014dubbed the \u2018soul of the city\u2019\u2014at the core, the township follows a structured design comprising industrial, cultural, residential, and international zones, all wrapped in a verdant embrace of forests, farms, and sanctuaries.<\/p><p>The NGT had previously ordered Auroville Foundation to submit an environmental clearance plan before proceeding with its ambitious projects, including ring roads and industrial infrastructure. But with the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, the red tape has been cut\u2014though the emphasis on sustainable development remains firm.<\/p><p>As the legal dust settles, Auroville finds itself back on track to fulfill its mission: a utopian hub where people of all nationalities live in harmony, free from the shackles of creed, politics, and, now, stalled development
