Rajasthan\u2019s recent initiative to give the national song a formal place alongside the national anthem has further intensified public attention.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"836\"><strong data-start=\"788\" data-end=\"836\">Historical Context and Shifting Expectations<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1250\">Composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and later musically rendered by Rabindranath Tagore for the 1896 Indian National Congress session, <em data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"993\">Vande Mataram<\/em> soon became a unifying slogan during the freedom struggle. Yet, by the early 20th century, disagreements emerged. Several Muslim leaders objected to portions of the poem that invoked the divine in a form they believed conflicted with monotheistic doctrine.<\/p><p data-start=\"1252\" data-end=\"1542\">Responding to these concerns, Mahatma Gandhi suggested in 1931 that only the first two stanzas\u2014those without overt religious imagery\u2014should be sung on political and public occasions. This approach eventually shaped the general understanding that informed later constitutional deliberations.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1544\" data-end=\"1592\"><strong data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1592\">Muslim Concerns and Increasing Divergence<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1959\">The Muslim League repeatedly resisted attempts to make singing <em data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1672\">Vande Mataram<\/em> mandatory, maintaining that specific lines conveyed imagery incompatible with Islamic belief. Jawaharlal Nehru ultimately proposed a middle path: <em data-start=\"2573\" data-end=\"2589\">Jana Gana Mana<\/em> would be recognised as the national anthem, and <em data-start=\"2638\" data-end=\"2653\">Vande Mataram<\/em> would receive official status as the national song, with only its initial two stanzas designated for formal and state functions.<\/p><p data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2925\">This carefully balanced decision prevented further divisions within the Constituent Assembly and has remained the accepted arrangement since.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"2927\" data-end=\"2961\"><strong data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"2961\">Contemporary Renewed Debate<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"2963\" data-end=\"3287\">The political meaning of <em data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3003\">Vande Mataram<\/em> continues to evolve. Periodic disputes arise whenever governments attempt to reinterpret its constitutional standing or mandate its singing. Rajasthan\u2019s recent policy shift\u2014along with Prime Minister Modi\u2019s comments\u2014has once again placed the song at the centre of national discussion.<\/p><p data-start=\"3289\" data-end=\"3631\">For many Indians, <em data-start=\"3307\" data-end=\"3322\">Vande Mataram<\/em> symbolizes the sacrifices of the freedom struggle. For others, it is a cultural emblem that requires sensitive handling in a diverse, plural society. As India marks 150 years since the poem\u2019s creation, the discussions surrounding it reveal deeper questions about identity, nationalism, and collective
