From M Veeralakshmi to Nancy Katnoria, women are taking the wheel and driving change in India’s workforce. Read our latest article to learn about their inspiring journeys as the first female ambulance drivers in their respective states and the changing stages of varied professions for women in India
In the vast tapestry of India’s history, the roles and expectations placed upon women have evolved significantly over time. From traditional roles as homemakers and caregivers to trailblazers in diverse professions, the journey of Indian women has been one of resilience, courage, and determination.
Today, we celebrate the changing stages of varied professions of women in India, where they are breaking barriers and proving their mettle in previously male-dominated domains.
One such woman, M Veeralakshmi, etched her name in history as the first woman ambulance driver not only in Tamil Nadu but in the entire nation. Her unwavering commitment to serving the community during emergencies sparked a movement, inspiring countless others to follow in her footsteps. Among them is Nancy Katnoria, who became the first woman ambulance driver in Himachal Pradesh. These extraordinary women have proven that no profession should remain restricted to a particular gender and that the spirit of compassion and dedication knows no boundaries.
While these achievements are undoubtedly noteworthy, it is essential to address the challenges that persist in fostering a more inclusive workforce. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey in 2018-19, the female labour force participation rate in India improved, going up to 18.6% in 2018-19 from 17.5% the year before but still it remains dishearteningly low. Several factors contribute to this disparity, including deeply ingrained social norms, limited access to education and training, and workplace discrimination. To achieve true gender equality, it is imperative to confront and dismantle these obstacles.
Thankfully, India has not remained complacent in this regard. Initiatives like the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) have emerged to empower women through skill training and enhanced employment opportunities. Through partnerships with various organizations, the NSDC offers training in fields such as healthcare, beauty and wellness, hospitality, and more. These programs play a crucial role in preparing women for diverse professions and creating a supportive environment where they can thrive.
As we continue to champion women’s empowerment, it is essential to draw inspiration from the pioneering women who have defied societal norms and shattered glass ceilings. One such trailblazer is Bhawana Kanth, who etched her name in history as India’s first woman fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. Her journey epitomizes courage, determination, and resilience, inspiring generations of young girls to dream without boundaries.
Similarly, the story of Shanti Tigga, the first woman jawan in the Indian Army, exemplifies the indomitable spirit of Indian women who seek to serve their country with pride and dedication. Her perseverance in the face of adversity has opened doors for countless other women to pursue careers in the armed forces.
These exceptional women serve as beacons of hope, dispelling the notion that certain professions are off-limits to women. They exemplify the potential that lies within every Indian woman, waiting to be unleashed and embraced. By nurturing and supporting this potential, we can forge a brighter and more equitable future for our nation.
To achieve a society where women have equal opportunities in every sphere of life, concerted efforts are needed. It is crucial to provide women with access to quality education, training, and mentorship to cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce. Additionally, we must challenge and transform archaic stereotypes that limit women’s choices and potential.
The changing stages of varied professions of women in India are a testament to the country’s progress in creating a more inclusive society. As we celebrate the achievements of these remarkable women, let us renew our commitment to empowering women and creating a world where dreams know no bounds. Together, we can build a nation where every woman can pursue her aspirations, irrespective of societal expectations, and where every profession becomes a realm of equal opportunities for all.
