    THE REVENGE PORN HELPLINE

Shielding Dignity, Combatting Non-Consensual Intimate Image Abuse

In an era where digital privacy is increasingly under threat, the unauthorised distribution of intimate images, colloquially known as ‘revenge porn,’ has emerged as a distressing violation of personal boundaries

On Snapchat, minors confronted with “revenge porn” since confinement - The Limited Times

The unauthorised sharing of intimate images, often referred to as ‘revenge porn,’ is a deeply troubling and pervasive issue that inflicts severe emotional distress on its victims. The consequences can be devastating, leading to mental health issues, social ostracisation, and in extreme cases, suicide. In response to this escalating problem, organizations like the Revenge Porn Helpline (RPH) and StopNCII.org are stepping up to provide much-needed support to victims and work towards eradicating such content from the internet.

    The Revenge Porn Helpline (RPH)

Established in 2015, the RPH has emerged as a ray of hope for those suffering from non-consensual intimate image (NCII) abuse. This UK-based entity has provided invaluable assistance to thousands of individuals, achieving an impressive success rate of over 90% in eliminating more than 200,000 non-consensual intimate images from the internet. The RPH serves as a crucial resource for victims, offering support, advice, and a means to regain control over their lives.

    StopNCII.org

Under the umbrella of the SWGfL charity, the RPH runs StopNCII.org, a critical weapon in the battle against NCII abuse. This complimentary service generates a unique hash from the victim’s intimate image(s) or video(s) and shares it with partner companies. This technology enables the identification and removal of non-consensual intimate content from online platforms, thus empowering victims to reclaim their digital identity.

    The Significance

The work of the RPH and StopNCII.org is vital in the fight against NCII abuse. These initiatives offer essential support and tools to victims, assisting them in navigating the difficult aftermath of such a personal violation. The importance of prevention cannot be overstated, highlighting the need for widespread awareness and education about the importance of consent and respect in intimate relationships.

StopNCII.org has received backing from major tech industry players, with Meta (formerly Facebook) joining forces with over 50 non-governmental organizations globally to support the initiative. Furthermore, international organizations like INHOPE work alongside the RPH to launch innovative tools in areas such as Greece, aiding victims of non-consensual intimate image abuse.

    Additional Organizations

Numerous organizations around the world are dedicated to helping victims of non-consensual intimate image abuse:

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) provides the “Take It Down” service, aimed at stopping the online dissemination of explicit content involving minors.

TechSafety offers a wealth of resources and advice for victims of image-based abuse, providing a comprehensive support network.

WESNET, an Australian organization, focuses on providing resources and guidance for victims of image-based abuse, contributing to the global effort against NCII abuse.

If you or someone you know is a victim of non-consensual intimate image abuse, remember that assistance is available. The Revenge Porn Helpline and other organizations worldwide are committed to supporting victims, removing illicit content, and creating a safer digital environment. By raising awareness and promoting education on consent and respect, we can all play a part in preventing NCII abuse and fostering a more secure online space for all.
