“Please understand what side effects would be of not taking the Covid vaccine,” Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized, as the Supreme Court dismissed a plea alleging side effects from the vaccine. The court highlighted the importance of vaccination, rejecting the petition as an attempt to stir unnecessary controversy.
The Supreme Court has dismissed a PIL that alleged side effects from Covid-19 vaccines administered during the pandemic. The bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, emphasized the importance of vaccination, asking the petitioner to consider the risks of not taking the vaccine.
During the hearing, Justice J.B. Pardiwala humorously inquired, “You took the vaccine? Anything happen to you?” to which the petitioner, after admitting he had taken the vaccine, confirmed he experienced no side effects.
The petitioner pointed to lawsuits in other countries, such as the U.K., where side effects like blood clotting have been linked to vaccines. However, the court viewed the PIL as an attempt to create unnecessary sensationalism, with CJI Chandrachud remarking, “This is just for other purposes.”

The petitioner had sought a detailed examination of AstraZeneca’s Covishield vaccine by a medical expert panel, as well as compensation for those severely impacted by vaccine side effects. The court rejected the plea, suggesting that the petitioner pursue a class action lawsuit if serious, rather than filing an Article 32 petition.
Previously, AstraZeneca had admitted in a U.K. court that its Covid-19 vaccine could potentially cause a rare side effect called Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS), linked to blood clotting. Despite these reports, Covishield, manufactured by Serum Institute of India, was widely administered in India with over 175 crore doses distributed.
