A petition has been lodged in the Supreme Court of India by a young couple in search of protection after they received threats from their families.
The young couple, consisting of a 19-year-old girl from Bihar and a 22-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh, arrived in Delhi with the aim of getting married. According to information provided by the lawyer of the couple, Harvinder Chaudhary, serious threats of violence were issued by the girl’s father and brother.
During a hearing of the case, which was conducted by a bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, it was revealed that the Supreme Court was approached by the couple after they saw information on social media suggesting that marriages could be arranged in the Supreme Court.

It was further added that the couple had met their lawyer in the parking area of the Supreme Court, after which a petition had been filed on their behalf. It was further added that after seeking help from a police station in Delhi, the couple had been arrested instead of being provided safety.
The couple had been advised by the Supreme Court of India to seek relief from the High Court of Delhi. It was added by the Chief Justice of India that such cases are usually settled on a priority basis by high courts based on judicial precedents set in the past.
It was further indicated that if they do not get relief from the High Court, they can again approach the Supreme Court.
In an interesting observation on the nature of parenthood, it was held that “the experience of motherhood begins when there is a child in one’s life, regardless of how that child comes into one’s life, through birth, adoption, or surrogacy.” The emotional connection between a parent and a child was emphasized as being universally applicable in all forms of parenthood.
This decision is an important step towards recognizing diverse family structures and further emphasizes that the right to personal liberty as enunciated in Article 21 encompasses the right to make a choice in family formations.
