In a recent development, the Madras High Court has strongly advocated for the closure of temples that become grounds for violence during festivals. The court’s remarks came during a hearing on a plea for police protection at a temple festival in Mayiladuthurai, where a dispute between two groups over the custody of a Vinayagar idol had escalated into violence.
Dismissing the plea, the court expressed its concern over how temple festivals have turned into demonstrations of power for rival groups, with little genuine devotion involved. The court emphasized that the primary purpose of temples should be to provide a sacred space for people to seek divine blessings, not to fuel conflicts and hostility.

The court further criticized the wastage of resources and efforts by the police and revenue departments in resolving such disputes. It pointed out that such conflicts could be easily avoided if people approached temple visits with humility and set aside their egos.
Finally, the court concluded that if temples cannot maintain an atmosphere of peace and harmony, it might be more prudent to close them down altogether.
